Music Therapy
Listening to, playing, and creating music can be enjoyable experiences for many, but music can also be used as a therapeutic tool to teach critical skills and help develop important pathways in the brain. Its patterning and structure can help bring order and predictability into a sometimes unpredictable and chaotic world. Guided by the latest research from the fields of child development, Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT), and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), musical activities, songs, and games are specifically designed to address the core challenges of the developing child.
When I tell someone that I am a music therapist, I often hear, “Music is so therapeutic.” Music is therapeutic, but music therapy is much more than that. When I use music in my sessions, I use it as a means to address specific behavioral goals. For a child with autism, targeting eye gaze and improving communication skills may be appropriate. For a child with ADHD, it may be selective attention and staying on-task. I specifically design each therapeutic musical experience and overall comprehensive program to address the individual needs of the client. And all the while, we are expressing ourselves through music and having fun.
Parent Coaching & Behavioral Consultation
In addition to music therapy services, I also provide parent coaching and behavioral consultation services to families and caregivers. If your child has been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, this may take the form of developing an early intervention home program (which may or may not include music therapy) or collaborating with parents to bring effective research-based practices into the home. If your child has been diagnosed with ADHD or exhibits oppositional behavior, I offer a coaching program for parents that addresses how to manage challenging behaviors while encouraging appropriate behavior at home and in the community.
Musical Instruction
I offer musical instruction in djembe drumming, percussion, and beginning piano. This is often integrated into my music therapy sessions, but I do offer this as a separate service as well.
